Title: Photo Finish!
Composer: Brant Karrick
Publisher: Alfred (available 2007)
Year Composed: 2006 (coyright 2007)
GRADE 2.5 DURATION 3:00 It's post time! The bugler splits the air with the familiar “Call to the Post,” and they’re off! There’s nothing more graceful, powerful, and exciting than a group of thoroughbreds pounding toward the finish line in their quest to become the next big winner. Photo Finish! is a musical tribute to the color, pageantry, and hoof-pounding action of a Kentucky horse race.

Using the first four notes of the famous bugle call to begin the main theme, the ABA structure of the piece musically relates to each aspect of the race. The first section evokes images of the racers bursting out of the starting gate and speeding down the backstretch. The expressive, lyrical melody of the middle section portrays the illusion of horses running in slow motion as they enter the far turn as it pays homage to the heart of Kentucky’s beautiful, pastoral horse country where many champions have been sired. The opening theme quickly returns, driving its way down the home stretch. Chromatics and other dissonances charge into the harmonies just like longshots and favorites crowding their way to the finish line requiring a, you guessed it, Photo Finish!
